Applying Silkspan

QUESTION:

Hi Bob,

I really enjoyed reading your article on applying silkspan using Eze dope.  That product is new to me so I will have to give it a try.  I also have an interest in building Guillow’s  RC conversion models.  Here’s a link to the Guillows Cessna 170  Kit 302LC that I built about 2 years ago.  It’s still going strong and it gets flown when the winds are calm.

I have been using glue stick to apply my tissue and the tissue is put on dry.   Then after the glue stick dries ( about 10 minutes)  I spray it with a very light mist of water.  Too much water and it softens the glue stick and then the tissue comes off.  When it’s dry and all the wrinkles are out, then I coat it with one coat of Sig or Aero gloss dope.  I might try using the Eze dope for this step.

Keep the great articles coming…  Will you be talking at all about how to size the motors for these RC conversions?

Best regards,

Doug A.

ANSWER:

Doug,

I looked up your C-170 article, which I remember having seen during an earlier search for what other guys have been doing with Guillow’s stuff. Nice work!

Try deluxe Materials Tissue Paste in place of the glue stick. It cures/dries waterproof  so the slipping loose problem should go away when you use it.

I’m not sure what the best way of addressing the motor size issue might be. At this point I suspect that I’ll include some relevant info in each of my articles on various airplanes.
